 The M4 Guide
« Thread Started on Mar 4, 2009, 10:04am »

Sirs trying to write up a guide/article "Gun Magazine" style.Currently a WIP. Tell me what you think so far. Hope this turns out well and informative for future M4 owners and builders alike.

Thanks. ;) ;D

It is perhaps the most prolific airsoft gun in use today, almost all parts and accessories you can think of this AEG has on the market. It is widely used by players around the globe and it is the M4a1 Carbine.
The M4's popularity seems to have its roots from Hollywood movies and as the standard issue weapon for the U.S Military.

I wrote this guide to help you decide (with practicality in mind) on building your M4 depending on your needs of course. Lets begin shall we? :D

The first thing that all players will face is choosing the right base gun brand the market is literally FLOODED with M4 makers making this the most common AEG around! I'm not here to tell you how to make it stand out from the crowd as I've said its too common. If you really want to stand out go for the road less travelled and get a different AEG model and again this will base on you "mission requirement".

The common choice today is getting an ACM AEG those ranges from names like Jing Gong,D'Boys/Boyi,AnK and so on. Then there are the higher end guns which are : Classic Army,Tokyo Marui,G&P,G&G,VFC and so on.

If you are just starting airsoft,I would highly recommend a Jing Gong M4,there are 3 versions of this AEG : 1st version has lots of metal parts with a plastic receiver and a gray metal gearbox which is no longer made, version 2 has a black gearbox instead, made with better materials and pre-upgraded as some claim and lastly the version 3 which is full metal pre-upgraded model.

It is up to you on what make to choose from as for models :

The M4 has a variety of models ranging from pistolized known as "stubby killers" CQB-R (Close Quarters Battle - Receiver or Rifle) to Full Length M4s.

The choice will again depend on you mission requirements to put some example :

Jungle type games require range and the standard M4 has that but jungle games also require maneuverability which the M4 can also provide.

And again it will depend on you. Example : I prefer a CQB-R for maneuverability since its lighter but can still have a decent range and I use it on most field games.

There are also models that comes with rail systems and I say GO for them as you can save money in the long run. Rail systems costs 1500 to 6000 Philippine Pesos depending on the model and manufacturer. Rail systems also allows you to attach accessories such as lasers, lights, vertical grips to grenade launchers. I'll discuss more on this later.

Then we have the upper receiver choice,we have two the fixed carry handle and the flat top receiver and anyone will tell you go for the flat top upper...why? Because it offers the perfect place to mount an optical device as mounting a scope especially a red dot on a carry handle is too high and besides the flat top upper is optic ready thanks to a 1913 rail on it. So in my opinion the flat top is the ONLY way to fly. But if using a rifle scope or a "sniper scope" it is best mounted on the carry handle as it gives a better sight picture since it is not obstructed by the front iron sight.

We now go to the optics. A basic aimpoint red dot scope with a high mount or cantilever mount is sufficient and most usable. It gives you a faster target acquisition and a greater chance of hitting the target. There are also many optics to choose from but almost all of them are the SAME in function since we are talking airsoft here. There is also the ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight) in which has two types : A red dot and a 1.5x -6x magnification depending on the model and these are not CHEAP.If you like the ACOGs' looks go for the red dot but if you prefer the functionality and if you have the money go for the magnifying one. Price ranges from 1,500 Php to 2,500 Php on the red dot and 3,000 to a whopping 7,000 Php on the magnifying ACOG. Rifle scopes can also be used on carbines as these are much cheaper and offer great scope but too much for airsoft in my opinion.

Iron sights : For me there is no need to replace the standard "triangle" sight of the M4 with fancy flip-up sights as the standard sight is always "at the ready" when you need it in case of optic failure or such, there are instances that an optic's lens could be shattered from a direct BB hit or the battery could run dry and so on,having an iron sight on all the time is a must. Some people go with the flip-up so the front sight doesn't obscure their optic same goes for the rear back-up sight but if the optic goes down the operator could take precious seconds flipping up the sights and disengaging targets then engaging again,so in my opinion having a sight on at all times is a must be it flip-up or fixed.

It is also good to have a flip-up rear and a fixed front, since the rear flip-up doesn't obscure your vision and you still have the front sight "at the ready" at all times.

Some people might say that this being airsoft we could just trace the BB's flight even without the sights, but based on my experience if you are engaging a target from afar the BB's grouping start to scatter and tracing the flight of a BB gets a little "distracting" still aiming with the sights is much better than "spraying and praying".

Rail Systems : As I've mentioned earlier on choosing a base M4,pick the one with a rail system as it would save you a lot in the long run. There are different variations but all offer the same function. I prefer the standard KAC R.I.S (rail interface system) as these are cheap and light and are a direct replacement for your plastic / polymer handguards. Not only does rail systems make your gun more functional it also adds more "cool" to it,but be warned don't over do it. :) If you are only going to mount a simple flash light and a vertical grip and don't want to spend much there are simple rail attachments for the standard handguard these could cost from 500 to 800Php. Rail Systems also comes with their problems,M4's has their battery at front and the R.I.S has no "standard sized" battery storage whatsoever but you can still fit in a "Nun chuck" li-poly batteries in. Buying a PEQ styled battery box or a battery pouch is mandatory or you can also transfer the wiring to the rear of the AEG which leads us to our next item. :

Butt Stocks :

There are different type of stocks with different functions. I am going to give some of the most common and perhaps much practical choices and again no need to go all fancy as the M4 is a "combat carbine" not a dress-up doll.

For most use the standard retractable stock is OK. I prefer the Crane stock or the LMT SOPMOD styled stock as it gives a good cheekweld specially when using optics and you can also store in batteries here easily and quickly unlike other butt stocks. There is also the MOD-Stocks (Modular) it looks differently but almost the same as the crane BUT installing batteries is a pain based on my experience. But if you really want to pimp out your M4,MAGPUL stocks are of excellent build specially with their MOE line but those are pricey still you can go for Chinese replicas. There are alot of stocks available just given a few as I've again said this will depend on your preference and needs.

Its good to know this article has been helpful somehow.

I might rewrite this in a shorter and clear manner when I had the time. :)
